The first time we came to see these Falls we made the drive there without realizing they had extremely strict hours and did not have enough time to walk up and see the falls.
They have an automatic gate on their parking lot and a sign which states the gate closes at 5 p.m. and if you are in the parking lot at that time you will be trapped and you will have to call the city and pay a minimum of a $100 fine to be let out.
It's definitely worth seeing and enjoying these Falls, just make sure to keep in mind the restrictive hours.
The only reason for my 4-star rating is what I feel to be overly restrictive hours as to when they are open. Starting on September 15th I believe it was, the trail and Parking Lot close at 5 p.m.
Beautiful views, but the natural beauty is being heavily impacted by visitors not staying on the trails in the gorge. Loss of plant life in those areas.
A bit off the beaten path but worth stopping. This spot is not called out with a conventional brown park sign but heading down Houghton Falls road is definitely worth the trip. The hike is quite manageable with only minor elevation changes. The creek that you follow starts as a trickle and slowly grows until you reach Lake Superior. Bring water shoes and/or your trunks because there are chance to get in the water towards the end. Very scenic in spots and easy for seniors and children to navigate.
Great park hidden away on a side road! Do not follow Google maps directions as it will lead you to a private road. The park is beautiful. Can be easy if you stay on the path, but the real adventure is found when you climb down into the river bed! Beautiful pictures to be taken!
I fully understand not wanting people to hang out on the property all night, but in mid-september 5 p.m. is a full two hours prior to Sunset.
The land and the waterfalls are absolutely beautiful. The trail was well maintained overall and pretty easy to walk on.
Nice, pleasant walk. Easy walk. Beautiful scenery. Can go swimming in the lake at the end of the trail, if you can handle the cold water!
